Poetry by Michael Goodwin

Only love…

I’ll meet you tonight where the eagle flies
and the sun has done fading away
and bring your warm smile
and hold me a while
for love has no words it can say
and we’ll walk by the stream, where fairies leave dreams
for lovers to catch in their sleep
and I’ll give you my heart
and only love can touch us so deep…
And love is but the promised land
where lovers come to meet
and love is grand and love is kind
and love is so discreet
and love is warm and takes your hand
and love is wild and sweet
yet like a whisper rested there
upon a silent prayer
for only love can touch the soul
for only lovelies there
only lovelies there…
So I’ll meet you where the lapwing sleeps
upon the southern breeze
and the stream it rolls across the ferns
and wets the silken leaves
and the moon will shine and you’ll be mine
as the stars, they shyly peep
and I’ll give you my heart
and you’ll know from the start
only love can touch us so deep
only love can touch us so deep…
“For love is a gently flowing stream…
happy in love, wherever she’s been”

IF…

If love was a flower it would blossom for you
for beauty sees beauty alike
and her petals would shine and dance with your smile

and dream of your eyes so bright
if love was a leaf, she would fall for your charm
and tenderly step from the tree
and sit by your side, for love cannot hide
the love that is wild and so free
If love was a song I would sing it for you
for music would rest in my soul
and the chaffinch would rise upon the blue skies
and the swallows would know their way home
and the bee’s with their honey would kneel at your feet
for sweetness is what they would find
and the butterflies dream can always be seen
with someone so gentle and kind
If love was a dream it would stay here tonight
to bless all the love in your heart
and the silence of night would turn to the light
and never would we be apart.
For love is the moon and love is the star
and love is the sky above
Love is the mist that walks in the dark
love is the one you love…
Love is the bird and love is the tree
love is the heart and blood
love is the soul that whispers to me
love is the one you love
love is the one you love…
If love was a flower it would blossom for you
for beauty sees beauty alike
and her petals would shine and dance with your heart
and dream of your eyes so bright
and dream of your eyes so bright…

The wishing tree

In the clearing stands a wishing tree
and she wishes all day long
with the Sun behind her silken leaves
with the birds to sing her song
and lovers sit beneath her boughs
and whisper words of love
and many dreams are wished upon
with many swollen buds

and tangled hearts have words to twist
the beauty of her tune
and deals of many shades are made
and left amongst the ruins
and many shelters from the storm
to seek a guiding hand
and make a wish for better days
a world to understand
and the raging bull he rides upon
an ancient road he found
with many dreams to cast aside
where many souls have drowned
and one by one we paint our hearts
upon a picket fence
and watch them as the tide comes close
with hope to make amends
and the tree she sighs so old and wise
and watches from above
for all who lay beneath her boughs
are seeking heavens love
and all who sigh and all who cry
are seeking heavens love…
And I wish I had the Angels eyes
to see another place
at least until the morning light
shines love upon my face
for I see the refugee so scared
and feel his lonely eyes
while lovers reach to catch their dreams
he waves his love goodbye
and never will he kiss her lips
or hold his blessed child
and only can his whispered prayer
save him for a while
and I wish I had the Angels eyes
to see and not to sigh…
And in the clearing stands a wishing tree
and she asks you to come near
and make a wish, a silent prayer
for all the world to hear…

The last green valley

I saw the last green valley
where the river cuts the trees
with the Sunlight falling on the hills
and the dandelion breeze
and the whisper from the cedar wood

bringing life into the leaves
and dreams have fallen heaven bound
to hear the silence breathe
and I thought of all you said to me
and all that words don’t say
how easily we fall in love
upon a summer’s day…
When the jasmine and the juniper
are heavy in the air
and we walk the fields where daisies
give their beauty to be shared
and the lark is cooing softly
with a passion in her blood
and we walk along together
with the Chaffinch and the dove
and our hearts have spoken for us
with not a word to say
how easily we fall in love
upon a summer’s day…
In a moment do we hold the dream
that lover can’t let go
a moment when our hearts are one
the moment lovers know
and the river cuts amongst the trees
with the blossom and the swell
and the moment comes and the moment goes
As lovers know so well
and I thought of all you said to me
and all that words don’t say
how easily we fall in love
Upon a summer’s day…
And I saw the last green valley
I thought I heard you say
how easily we fall in love
upon a summer’s day…

Without love…

I am an orphan to the streets of life
my heart is closed, my hands are tied
my hope is missing, lost far away
my truth is silent no words to say
my dreams are broken my path is gone
my throat is weak without a song
my peace is fighting to be free
for only love can love but see….
for only love can love but see…

The fisherman

I dreamed I was a fisherman
casting nets upon the sea
and all the dreams of all the world
were there inside of me
and I held the love of heaven
inside the nets I cast
and the ocean took away the love
and gave to all who asked
and the world was turning faster
and the love began to say
“come all of men and take my hand
and see a better day”
and the seagull and the sea horse
could see all that would be
and the mermaid and the dolphin
called from eternity
and the wind it spoke so softly
to the flower and the tree
and I smiled and looked to heaven
and heaven looked at me
and I dreamed I was a fisherman
casting nets upon the sea…

The fledgling

Could we sit and talk of days gone by
and many things to come
for we are the dream that makes it so
until the dream is done
and we walk a lonely misty road
with all things in our blood
but fortune favours up the brave
for all roads lead to love

And I crave the water of my soul
to quench away my thirst
for many hearts have passed this way
with many different verses
and all is washed to make it clean
and painted from above
forever do we seek your grace
for all roads lead to love

and I pity the poor fledgling
who hides beneath the tree
and doesn’t know or understand
of anything he sees
who watches from the place he rests
the Vulture and the dove
and stretches slowly with his wings
for all roads lead to love…
And he knows not what the words he sings
for all roads lead to love…

The lily…

The Lilly rests beside the path
that all men come to see
and watches with a silent smile
at all that has to be
and she waits to see the eagle fly
high up in the sky
and the fox that whimpers passing by
who seeks his path to die
and the preacher and the layman
who come to say their prayers
the huntsman and the horses
who dig the badgers lair
and the judges and the lawyers
who hide behind their mask
the teachers and the scholars
who tell us of our past
and the lovers and the liars
who all pass by this way
with the ones that love forgot about
and the lonely and dismayed
for the seeker and the soldier
have marked upon the tree
and all is one and one is all
but the lilly’s heart is free
for she knows the many twists and turns
that all men come to see
and watches with a silent smile
at all that has to be…

If only

If only love could see your eyes
the way they shine tonight
with perfumed lips and Angels smile
you carry heavens sight
Oh child of fortune seek your path
for all must turn to gold
from oceans deep and valleys green

the heavens are your home
and never let your eyelids close
upon the promised land
for love is swollen in your heart
someday to understand
and see the moon is waiting there
to talk with you at night
and count the stars upon the hills
where nightjars catch the light
and seek upon the journey’s end
to make believe your dreams
with pockets full of wanderlust
and apple blossom fields
if only love could see your eyes
then love would sing so free
if only love could see your eyes
then love would be with me…
