Ebru Turgay
Born on August 30, 1998, Ebru Turgay is a Turkish Cypriot poet and English Language Teacher whose voice drifts between languages, emotions, and imagined realities. A native speaker of Turkish, she is also fluent in English and German, her multilingual sensibility shaping a poetic world that is both intimate and expansive.
A graduate of Girne American University with a Bachelor’s degree in English Language Teaching, Turgay inhabits two parallel realms: one of structure and pedagogy, and another of boundless creativity. Her passion for writing, rooted in childhood, flourished during her college years, where poetry became both refuge and revelation. With over 130 poems to her name, she continues to explore the delicate intersections of love, perception, and surreal thought.
Her work often carries a quiet longing, an emotional echo that lingers between presence and absence. In “My Rain, My Sun,” she writes:
“Desires are like stars
They carry you
Into another world
Far, far away from here…”
Love, in her poetry, is both a question and a destination, uncertain, yet irresistible.
Turgay’s voice also turns inward, asking disarmingly simple yet profound questions about existence. In “Money Follows,” she reflects:
“Money is all with us ’til death
But what is life after all?
Is it a penny or what?”
and then, with striking tenderness:
“What is life? What is death?
A sunbathing kid’s kiss on the cheek with a smiley face”
Her work frequently dissolves the boundaries between logic and imagination. In “Stupid Thoughts,” reality bends into the surreal:
“Fish fly
Oranges bloom and turn blue
Whales walk down the aisle”
Similarly, in “Trick-Track Clock,” time itself becomes fluid:
“The time flows like a river…
The clock is ticking on the wall
It is like a myth with sorrow”
Philosophical undertones emerge in her reflections on perception and reality. In “Idealism: Alice in Wonderland,” she writes:
“According to Berkeleyan Idealism, to be is to be perceived. Reality is fluid.”
This sense of fluidity extends into her visual and symbolic storytelling. In “Champagnes and Thrones,” she creates a world of illusion and hidden identities:
“This is a masquerade…”
– a space where power, desire, and uncertainty collide.
Her poetry also captures fleeting urban and sensory moments. In “Flamboyant Life,” she paints a vivid nocturnal scene:
“Street lights are sparkling while cars are raging fast…
London is lively, so lively in the nighttime”
At times, her work turns sharply introspective and critical, revealing deeper social and emotional layers. In “The Virgin Doll,” she writes:
“She is a puppet…
and her strings are in the hand of men”
A striking image of fragility, control, and loss.
Yet, amidst complexity, her poetry returns to wonder and renewal. In “The Miracles Happen in the Ocean,” she reminds us:
“Miracles happen at night
Miracles happen in the ocean…”
Ebru Turgay’s poetry is instinctive and evocative, at once tender, surreal, and unafraid. Her words move between innocence and intensity, logic and dream, the visible and the unseen. As both educator and poet, she continues to shape language while being shaped by it, giving voice to the quiet, the chaotic, and the beautifully uncertain.
We are delighted to present a selection of her poems to the readers of Global Poet and Poetry, inviting you into her luminous, shifting, and ever-unfolding world.

How dare you?!
You always make me wonder if you love me
Then you disappear again
Why do you do this to me, my love?
Like a rain, like a scent..
You are not a Saint
I know but I still try to bear
Standing here
Waiting for a last call
An opportunity
To fall in your trap
I am not sorry wanting to marry you
Desires are like stars
They carry you
Into another world
Far far away from here
Like it is real
Real.. as it.. can be…
Maybe….

Turning the key
Opening new chances
A dream world is waiting for you
Both fame, love and enemies
Said Ernesto with worried eyes
Black dreams, white life
A mind on the clouds
A gold mine is not afar
Wealth sprouts

I see a black man from afar
I see the light in his eye
Is it a lightning or a star?
I couldn’t catch it, it flew away
Flew over the white lady’s big magenta hat
Is he an African or a Brazilian?
Leave some space for a Caucassian
Stood right in front of me with the hope of a scenery
But I am not gonna kiss my husband or do anything like that
Oh, I am not that young, come on, please!
But who is this?
A mysterious beast
Staring for a kiss
He is a hopeless romantic
Still popping his zit

Overthinking handles my situation
Sitting here and thinking deep in thoughts..
Time passes
Fish fly
Oranges bloom and turn blue
Whales walk down the aisle
Models are unemployed now
Rabbits smoke
Racoons get high
Roses are in sorrow
But how?
This thinking style is stupid
I know, but it’s stuck in my mind

Ah, how nice is this doll..
With red lips and pink blush on her cheeks
Very pure and elegant
Just like a white swan on a lake
But is it a doll or?
Wait
When I come closer I see her
I see that she is a puppet
A puppet, yes!
A puppet that is played on a stage
A puppet that is teased, laughed at
And humiliated..unfortunately
She is a puppet and her strings are in the hand of men
Yes!
This is true!
A man which is dominant and a rebel
Raging through the night
Caging the little fragile glass doll
And getting her undone
The pink cute little dress falls from her legs
Onto the floor
She was a virgin
But now a broken piece of glass all over the oak wood floor

A starfish with stardust
Where the moon falls with its light on the ocean water
Stars glitter the sky and rise at night through the dark globe
Miracles happen at night
Miracles happen in the ocean
Where all the ocean creatures and humans meet
The flesh binds with the water
And surrenders to the vast ocean floor
The body floats over
The mind surfs on the beach sand with oysters giving birth to a pearl
Sun comes up
And the hopes are down
When the night comes
The miracle starts all over again and again and again….

The time flows like a river
Ocean creatures flying one by one
A colorful rainbow in the sky after the rainfall
The clock is ticking on the wall
It is like a myth with sorrow
Birds are swimming in the air
One by one falling onto the floor
Coming to the end of a story
With a white snowfall…
Morning o’clock
Coffee in a pot
Bitter chocolate cream with a good taste
Now is the time to rest
Maple syrup with a newspaper in my hand
Who will cook the pancake?
Cigarette smoke with a mint gin
Where is my Huckleberry Finn?

Water dripples
Becomes a river
Baptizing the baby
He knew he will be
The sacrifice was for that
Oh Jesus! Come and take my life
And shed my blood to the God-given river bank
Where all the lives bind
That’s when I find peace and rise
The bishop of the future rises
Born again from the blood river
Learning from his past mistakes
Like every human
And when the time comes
Falls to the ground where the maple tree grows
With a tear on his eye dropping to the soil
Black inkblot drops lightly on an engagement ring
The pearl ring turned into black
From all the catastrophe back then
The ring sparkled with misery
Swirled on the floor and stopped at the edge of the dark room
Now all painted black
Imagination fades away
With a broken promise for their vibrating hearts..
Music overflows down my nerves
Reaching my heart
Running heavily in my oxygen
Surrounding my lungs
Youtfulness binds with music
Stepping on every chord
Playing song pieces in my core
Today we are so young, so folk
Dressed in polka dots

An audience observes the colorful world of theatre
Roles are shared
Scripts are written
Players sing songs and dance with each other
They are teammates, they are roommates, sisters and brothers
Clowns make funny gestures
While the gentleman hold their drinks
They sip from a gin glass
And watch with amusement from the lodge
The curtain opens and action
Is it the play that catches their attention
or the harsh taste of their real lives?
It is still a mystery

A dark green poison
Running through my blood
I cannot remember what was light
My happiness begins to fade away
As so the remaining light left in the apple of my eye
Leaving me breathless what a shame
Just like a greedy rat left invisible under raindrops
still begging for a well life

You give my oxygen into my lungs
You bring me to life
Our eyes meet each other
And they never regret flowing their warm blood into our nerves
Both leaving a touching expression on our red full lips
And a lipstick mark on your favourite poem book
Filled with song lyrics and hope
A relationship that is tied with a rope
A vast ocean floor created from marble full royal marina
Fish swim recklessly without coming back
Celebrating their love anniversary on a bright summer day date

The tree branches are twingling
The blue skies are feeling the soft air
The spring has come
With its joy and blonde hair
The bells are ringing with marriage
How about a cute little baby in a carriage
The couples are going to voyage
A voyage that will be incomplete ’til the end of their life journey
The diamond necklace in its big black box
What if we climb to the hard black rocks?
The sea is washing over the golden sand dunes
Let’s walk to our love nest ’til love ruins

We gather at a dinner
Wine and dine
Luxury comes
To our feet serving all night
A Chinese tradition we have here
Which they call Lazy Sue
We become happy drunk ladies tonight
And tomorrow morning somewhat blue
What was it called?
Ah, Lazy Sue.

A friend group, a coffee cake
Sticking toffee on the plate
A mug sitting there on the table
Cooks laughing at each other on a lovely break
Friends chit-chatting, having fun
They had their dinner done
Served well, satisfied
They mingle with others
Playing coy, having wit
A beautifut bright spring leaf on the tree wig
Which is seen which is not?
They had their garden of love rot
With more and more fault

What a beautiful palate
Spreading its colors
Is it your face?
Or your mother’s?
Rumors are spreading fast
Like a woman trapped in a cage
Roaring like a beast
She is fragile, so weak
But is she a man’s nightmare in a beautiful night sleep?

Red bows and ribbons
A red passion in her heart
All I can see was red
Now it is black
Sunflower oil scent escaping into the air
Like the thoughts in her smokey messy hair
Round and round the stairs go on
What a magnificience, what a large bloody collarbone
A desperate love a big car accident in a blood red car
Is it love or is it an obsession of him seen from her eye?
No time left, now is the the time leading to death
A red lipstick and big brown eyes now closing heavily shivering with dark

A baby calf sitting in the stable
What an angelic baby in need to drink milk
Baby calf being left behind by her mother
Letting the little girl give milk to her little one
Oh little one, satisfy your hunger
You hear the footsteps of your mother
The sound gets louder and louder
Like a lonely thunder
Oh little one, satisfy your hunger
You hear the gun trigger
Hopes are getting bigger and bigger
Escaping is not easy
From the stable

Gone wild with the wind
Blowing my mind
With all the flames running down
The terrace to the vast sea
Neither you nor me
Have an idea of dreams
What it takes to be
In an illusion burning in deep flames in our souls
Come my friend
Now you will learn
The thin line between a world full of stars and scars
Roses being torn and falling onto the cold ground
Sorrow and pain is lingering
Come my friend
Now you will learn
All the moons and fidgeting
Blues and songs
Wandering around the roads
Cars speeding around furiously
With ambition and vanity
Staring at the stars in the night sky
Coming to the end of a poem with future hopes and pure madness

I’m just a girl
Light as a feather’s soul
Valuable as an old pearl
With all my hope and sorrow
Letting all happen with no remorse
I’m just a girl
Yes, I wanna change the world
I wanna let the winter come in all ways and let the breeze freeze me with all of its furious arrow
I’m just a girl
I wanna swim the ocean and pass to other countries with my touching and full heart
My heart is aching but strong
I’m just a girl
Not naive, not fearful
All left behind now
With a dozen heartaches and left-behinds
Not a tear drop anymore
Brave and cheerful
Overthinking is not anymore
With love and a new role

Some days were painted
Some were black
Some music
Some Arabesque
The days gone slow
With boredom and fate
But what is the point after all?
Would you be willing to wait for the days ahead?
Love and fresh air
Seems not for me
I like nostalgic
Old and black ruby

Pretty bob hair
Marilyn wear
Spring fields with butterflies
Time flies
A gentleman walks to her
Giving her a kiss in the air
She catches it with a hurry
Like there is no time to worry
A pearl earring drops from Marilyn’s ear
He says please give it to me dear
She decides to play
And flirts with him til the other day
The next day he goes to park
She smirks to him like a little child
Love is in the air
In the hands of a gentle heir

Twinkle twinkle little star
Catching it from afar
It is like a dream come true
Twinkle twinkle little star
Dare to catch it from afar?
Stars are running and flying
Planets are turning around
This is a true mystery
Kids are wondering how
Twinkle twinkle little star
Coming from afar
