Weekly Selected Poem: Apu Mondal

Apu Mondal

Childhood

.

Like the grass that grows
At the feet of the trees
Is our childhood, enough
Shade and shine,
And just the right rainfall,
And the cool breeze in
Summer and hibernation
Inside the earth roots
In Winter,
And when a bit higher,
Nipped and cropped so
Nicely by the cattle,
So we can regrow without
Regrets,
In the warm lap of earth.

 ………………………………………………

What I ever Owe

.
If ever I’m in debt,
I shall owe to my
Mother first, for
Bearing me, rearing
Me and keeping me
Among the stars,
Then to my father
For enriching me
In body and wisdom,
Sending me to school
Where I owe teachers
For infusing knowledge,
Joy and understanding
Of life, my classmates
And lifelong friends
For sharing food and
Thought, for applauding
My progress,
Then my brother for
Defending me in stress,
Supporting in morale.
And finally to the God
Unseen, living in the sky,
Always patiently
Unlocking doors unknown
After listening to prayers.

…………………………………………………….

What if you are black

.
How they gaze on you :
Is it your skin they search
Or the shadow following
You close,
I have a solution
I shall look straight into
Your eyes,
Trying to fathom your
Dreams,
Revive your hopes,
Find a way of restoring
Your fancies,
You seem black on colour
Your eyes are black
Like mine,
Hairs too,
I have worn your shirt
And Jeans too,
Had your muscles and
Strength,
Loved like you did
And wept as bitter as you
Only nobody knows that
I am as black as they are
Inside,
I hate when someone looks
At me like I’m black.

……………………………………………………

Trees

.

Trees never feel old
Neither do suffer cold
Suave but inwardly bold
They’ve stories told
Under the sky, they pray
Till it’s time for new day
And they never go away
When darkness has sway
They are more than kind
To any who need to unwind
Protecting animals on land
And creatures that bind.
