Dig Up The Bones by David Lee Morgan

How do you kill Godzilla
When it keeps on getting bigger
You gotta get smarter, quicker
You gotta learn from experience
Scientific experiment
That’s what a revolution is
We learn, we get smarter
We get more dangerous
We have to fight for this
We have to fight for food, clothing, shelter
Breathable air, drinkable water
Why wouldn’t we have to fight for knowledge too
Not just to get it, but to keep it
Revolutions are attacked whenever they happen
Beaten to death, and the beating still goes on
Our leaders are murdered again and again
Long after they are dead and buried
They are dug up and dismembered

So let them dig
Open the earth
Bring out the dead
Let them speak
Revolution feeds on truth
And the world is hungry for it

We are on the brink of a terrible war
Not just for an island, but for a planet
Global genocide, global suicide
Is staring us in the face
Sitting on the horizon, nibbling on the possibilities
We look into its eyes and we do not see it
Not because we are stupid
But because of our intelligence
This mighty power
Evolved over millions of years
Is slave to an even mightier power
The power of love, altruism, loyalty
To the family, to the tribe, to the nation
To Africa, to Europe, to the West, to the East
We use this mighty power of intellect
To defend our side, come what may
Reasoned debate is not simply an exercise in logic
It’s an act of loyalty
To give in to reason, when the facts are against us
Would be an act of betrayal

Science is an act of betrayal
No matter how much we love, no matter who
We put that aside and follow the evidence
This victory of logic over love
Can lead to terrible crimes
Or it can lead to liberation
To a wider, deeper, truer kind of love

Revolution is a war against love for love
Against narrow sectional love
For the love of the human race
Revolution can never be spontaneous
It can start that way
People rise up against injustice
We always will, we do this to survive
But we are prisoners in our own minds
Thousands of years of class rule
Millions of years of evolution
Must be struggled with and transformed
Revolution is not just about power
It’s about consciousness, agency
Understanding the world and how it works
Understanding ourselves and how we work
The imagination takes flight
We follow it, test it, break it
Build back better, fly higher
We will never be entirely free
We are made by the world we are making
But we can become more and more free

Righteous anger is the beginning of this journey
The love of my people is the beginning of this journey
But if it stops there, it corrodes into its opposite
We end up fighting for the enemy
Worse, we become the enemy

When Haiti came to Paris
It came with a gift, with a message, with a lesson
You talk of the universal rights of man
We are men – you didn’t see us
Look again, look deeper
Dig up the bones, read them, remember
We are all blind
Until we see with each other’s eyes
