Poetry for Peace : Michael Goodwin

DON’T DROP THE BOMBS

The birds they hide when they hear the bombs
behind their shield of light
Into their silence no chirp or song
Into the scent of darkest night
for they only hear the children cry
and sigh with every breath
and they only see the blossoms die
and pray for those bereft
for the dove and lark, they sit alone
and shake their heads and mourn
and the world has lost another day
as another day is born
and the crimson tide it shakes it’s tail
and floods upon the land
and the birds they hide beneath red skies
can love but understand…
………………………………………

THE ANGEL…

I heard the cry of an Angel
and the Angel cried with me
and we sailed the seas together
til both our hearts were free
and the ocean took our dreams away
beyond eternity
and our boat was made of golden fleece
on the wild wind and the scree
and our hands held tight together
so all men could be free…
And the seagull sang a song of hope
for the oceans and the land
and the vultures in the dessert trees
held faith upon the sands
and we lived our lives as sailors
and the moon became our dream
and we followed from the light above
and the light was bright on me
and our hearts were touched together
so all men could be free…
And we saw the rhythm of the rain
and the scorching of the Sun
and the helpless and the needy
and the ones who held the gun
and the poet and the jailor
the axe that cuts the tree
and our dreams were dreamed together
so all men could be free…
And someone has to take the blame
and cry for all of us
and count the tears of a thousand years
and cry them down to dust
for who could know the ways of peace
until the silence comes
and who could know the ways of love
until the wars are done
and someone has to seek the truth
the Angel said to me
and our love was borne together
so all men could be free…
Our love was borne together
so all men could be free…
…………………………………………………..

IT WAS EASY IN THE END…

Did you know the wars are over
did you know they all made friends
It was easy once they tried it
It was easy in the end
And you know, they feel so clever
but it’s only what we said
can we hope it lasts forever
can we pray for all the dead
And the people who are homeless
have returned to their homelands
and the children are so happy
could they ever understand
For they lost a thousand lifetimes
to the bullets and the bombs
and their tears have made a river
where the peace of love belongs
Did you know the wars are over
did you know they all made friends
It was easy when they tried it
It was easy in the end
It was easy in the end…
…………………………………………

THE LOVE THAT IS NO MORE…

I learnt to lie after the war
It was all I thought to do
for people lie who have done so wrong
but lies don’t make the truth
I wandered lonely with mind so weak
I cried with every breath
and in a moment God I saw
and cried for every death
for something changes deep inside
amidst the battles roar
the lies of fate are laid upon
the love we had before
and hearts are different deep inside
and twists you to the core
and no one knows the lies we tell
for love we had before
and hearts they bleed for those who fell
the love that is no more…
