Poetry by Teresa Latos

Was it worth it?

A bird sang somewhere high in the branches
I looked at the sky and saw a plane
And I thought birds are flying people travelling
And I am sitting here nothing is happening
Although the views are beautiful all around
When in spring life bloomed in the grove
On the meadows and fields green carpets
The scent of bird cherry and forest lily of the valley
Summer covered the sky with blue
Autumn decorated with red and gold
Winter covered the earth with snow
The landscapes were wonderful but I wanted more
And I set off on my journey of life
What I was looking for today I don’t know myself
A better life of happiness or maybe fulfillment
I packed my luggage and marched
I traveled half the world or more
I settled in a country among people who were unknown to me
Where all cultures intertwined into one
Skin colors and foreign unknown languages
That was a journey that took me
To another life far from my loved ones
I have settled down in this second homeland

But my heart yearns and longs to return

You lived as you wanted
You conquered peaks strewn with corpses
Because the ambition was growing
The appetite was great
You have achieved everything
Fortune and fame
But how quickly life passed
And you were placed in the most expensive coffin
But to the gravedigger you were a corpse
He covered it with earth
Without shedding a tear
And everyone went home with relief
You stood completely naked before the Lord
You were shaking like a trembling aspen
Because there is no trickery or cunning here
You can’t fool God anymore
You lived as you wanted (the devil’s commandment)
What are you looking for here?
Leave My gates
Go where these hellfires burn
Because you deserved it with your life
.
