Chattering of the Mind

It keeps on blabbering
inside, non-stop.
Without asking, it keeps speaking.
Worst of all, whatever it says—
it says it wrong, and we readily believe.
We don’t question it,
we keep listening to its voice.
It lives within,
and we feel and believe it is our own.
The voice sounds like ours,
so how can we ignore it?
We accept its authority—
it rules us; we become its slaves.
We trust that it wants our well-being,
yet its words say otherwise.
It always taunts,
it puts us down,
it makes us angry,
it fills our hearts with guilt.
It is afraid and only speaks of bad things.
Imagine the torment it brings us,
the damage it does—
and we are helpless,
without much choice
but to accept it,
without putting up a fight.
Thus, the chatter of the mind
goes on continuously, never stopping,
until it becomes us—
our integral reality.
