Shikor and Global Poet and Poetry Hosts Literary Evening in London Honouring Subodh Sarkar and Soumya Dasgupta
An evening of poetry, dialogue, and cultural exchange was recently organised in London by Shikor and Global Poet and Poetry, under the leadership of its founder and poet Faruk Ahmed Roni, to honour two distinguished contemporary Bengali poets, Subodh Sarkar from Kolkata and Soumya Dasgupta from California.
The programme brought together a vibrant gathering of well-known poets and literary figures living in London and nearby cities, creating a warm and intellectually engaging atmosphere in celebration of Bengali poetry and its global reach. The event was chaired by Faruk Ahmed Roni in the presence of the guest poets, along with many poets, writers, and poetry lovers from the local literary community.
Subodh Sarkar, one of the most prominent voices in contemporary Bengali poetry, is widely known for his powerful, intellectually charged, and socially aware poetic voice. Based in Kolkata, his work explores themes of love, resistance, social responsibility, urban experience, and human conscience. His poetry has been published in numerous acclaimed collections and translated into several languages, earning him a strong readership both in India and internationally. Through decades of writing, editing, and mentoring, he has remained a defining presence in modern Bengali literature.
Throughout the evening, poets living in London read their own original poems, while several participants also recited poems by Subodh Sarkar, paying tribute to his literary influence and artistic legacy. The interaction between the honoured poets and local voices created a meaningful dialogue between homeland and diaspora.
The event was conducted by poet and popular rhyme writer Dilu Naser, whose thoughtful moderation guided the programme smoothly. Among the distinguished guests on stage was senior poet Syed Shahin, whose presence added further depth and dignity to the occasion. A warm, floral welcome was extended to all guests by Kaberi Mukherjee, Assistant Editor of Global Poet and Poetry, reflecting the spirit of respect and hospitality that defined the gathering.
The evening featured rich literary and poetic discussions, reflections on contemporary Bengali poetry, and conversations on its evolving global context. The programme concluded as a memorable cultural gathering, reaffirming Shikor and Global Poet and Poetry’s commitment to promoting international literary exchange and strengthening bonds among poets across borders.
